In line with Dental Health Week (4th-10th August), leading oral care brand, Ordo, is making it their mission to highlight the importance of oral health and its link to other areas of health.
New research, conducted by Ordo via Antenna Insights has revealed that;
· Almost 90% of Australians understand there’s a link between oral health and overall health
· Only 6% Aussies take their oral health more seriously than other aspects of health (physical health 49%, mental health 38%, emotional health 6%, oral health 6%)
· Only 1 in 10 Australians felt there wasn’t a connection between oral health and overall wellbeing
Even though the majority of Australians in the study report knowing there is a connection, very
few are making oral health a priority in their everyday routines, which in turn, can have
significant impacts when it comes to overall wellbeing.
“The mouth is the gateway to your body and poor oral health has been linked to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's and even pregnancy complications,” says Oral Health Therapist and Ordo Spokesperson, Lauren Lennon.
“Inflammation in the gums doesn’t just stay put, it can travel into the bloodstream. And weirdly, your dentist might spot signs of a health issue before your GP does. From diabetes to deficiencies, it’s wild how much your mouth can reveal.”
Lauren goes on to explain that there is also a big generational divide – whereby older Australians focus more on physical health, while younger generations place greater emphasis on mental health.
“Oral health is still often left behind,” says Lauren. “It’s the wellness habit that keeps getting bumped to tomorrow’s to-do list for all generations. We need to change this narrative.”
